Types of Child Abuse

Child abuse and neglect are serious charges that have varying punishments based on the type of abuse an individual is accused of. There are 4 main types of abuse:

  • Physical abuse: any physical aggression exerted by an adult on a child. This includes punching, shoving, shaking, slapping, kicking, etc.
  • Psychological/emotional abuse: the form of abuse that is most difficult to define and prove. This form of abuse involves an adult harming a child’s emotions or cognitive processes through non-physical means, such as belittling, name-calling, humiliation, etc.
  • Neglect: a form of abuse in which the parent or caregiver fails to provide the child with adequate resources to survive. Neglect can take the form of failing to provide food, shelter, schooling, clothing, affection, and medical attention to the child.
