Harris County police crackdown on organized retail crime

Posted on September 22nd, 2010 No Comments

Harris County officials have taken notice of an increased number of incidents involving organized retail crime in the Houston area.  According to county statistics, 89 percent of Harris County retailers are victims of organized retail crime.  The most common items stolen are designer clothing, electronics, over-the-counter drugs, and baby formula.  Organized criminals then try to sell items for a profit.

Billboards and signs on cabs reading “Stop Organized Retail Crime” will soon be appearing all over Houston.  Police believe the public’s recognition is key to lowering the amount of organized retail crime in the county.  Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia stated, “We’re talking about folks who are actually putting millions of dollars of a dent into our local economy and are  challenging these particular retailers who employ hundreds of people across the Harris County community”.
