Harris County offers program to expunge DWIs

Posted on December 15th, 2010 No Comments

Harris County recently created a program to help drivers convicted of their first DWI to have the charge expunged from their record.  The program, called DIVERT, or Direct Intervention using Voluntary Education Restitution and Treatment, allows drivers to agree to two years of supervision, counseling and sobriety in exchange for having the charges expunged.

In Harris County, approximately 6,000 people are arrested on first-time offense drunk driving charges every year.  Also, the county has the country’s highest annual rate of drunk driving-related fatalities.  The process is very similar to deferred adjudication in that if the program’s participants stay out of trouble for a certain period of time the charges are dropped.

If you have been charged with driving while intoxicated there are several options you can pursue to have the charges dismissed.  Contact the Houston DWI attorneys of Johnson, Johnson & Baer P.C. at 713-523-0404 today to set up an appointment with one of our experienced criminal defense attorneys.

According to Friendswood Police, arrests involving methamphetimes are on the rise in the the city.  Police believe the drug’s relative affordability is to blame.  An official from the Bay Area Recovery Center said of the highly addictive drug, “You can spend five dollars on meth, 10 dollars on meth, do a little line and be high for hours”.

Just last week three people were arrested in Friendswood for possession of methamphetimes.  In previous years, Friendswood police say they would make around 6 arrests for meth possession.  So far this year already 30 arrests have been made.

Surveillance cameras to be installed in downtown Houston

Posted on December 1st, 2010 No Comments

The  city will be installing 250 to 300 more surveillance cameras at downtown intersections to help catch both traffic and non-traffic related crimes.  The Department of Homeland Security is sponsoring the installation which began over the summer.

City officials say the cameras that have already been installed have helped catch several car thieves.  In addition, they hope that in the future law enforcement officers will be able to survey a crime scene before approaching the situation.

The first fifty cameras were installed throughout the city around the George R. Brown Convention Center, Minute Maid Park, Discovery Green Park and around the theater district.  Cameras are expected to be added around Reliant Stadium, city parks and the Port of Houston.
