Technological advances aid in identity theft

Posted on August 5th, 2011 No Comments

Experts say that the development of technologies like radio frequency identification, or RFID, has contributed to increases in federal crimes like identity theft and credit card fraud.

RFID is able to transfer information from a chip to a scanner through radio frequency waves.  RFID chips are found in credit cards, drivers’ licenses, and passports.  Scanners for RFID chips, like the ones used at many check-out counters, have become relatively easy to purchase for a small fee.

According to a survey completed and published by the Federal Trade Commission in 2009, Texas has one of the highest rates of identity theft complaints in the country.  An average of 130.3 Texans out of every 100,000 has reported experiencing identity theft.
