Neighbors use social media to reduce crime

Posted on September 28th, 2011 No Comments

A neighborhood in Houston is using social media to prevent neighborhood crime.  The social media website, My Virtual Neighbor, was first used in the 3000-3099 block of Sage Road near the Galleria.

In the Houston neighborhood, use of the website between neighbors reduced crime by 80 percent within 10 weeks.  Police say that people looking to commit theft or home invasion crimes have become deterred from neighborhoods that they know are using the website.

The website is a part of an effort titled “National Night Out,” which aims to reduce neighborhood crime.
