Judge rules Megaupload.com search warrants illegal

Posted on June 28th, 2012 No Comments

A New Zealand judge has determined that the search warrants produced for the search of Megaupload.com founder Kim Dotcom’s mansion were not valid.

The FBI and New Zealand police raided the internet mogul’s home on January 20. They seized an estimated NZ$11 million from his bank accounts, took 18 luxury cars, and procured 150TB of data they believe might include incriminating evidence.

Because of the international nature of the copyright infringement and money laundering charges against him, the warrant needed to explicitly state which country’s laws he was being accused of breaking. The judge lambasted the warrants’ vague accusations of copyright infringement in addition to the resulting investigation, states a report from Ars Technica.

Police searches and seizures need to be carried out in a very specific way to remain lawful. If you believe your rights are being infringed upon through illegal search and seizure, contact the criminal defense attorneys of Johnson, Johnson & Baer, P.C. at 713-523-0404.
