Houston Police pulled over a vehicle on U.S. 63 after they noticed the car swerving in and out of lanes. The car was being driven by a 64-year-old Houston woman who had her grandson with her in the vehicle.

She was asked to get out of her vehicle at a traffic stop, where she performed field sobriety tests, and, according to the police, failed them. She was arrested and taken into custody.

The Houston grandmother faces several charges, including failure to drive on the right side of the road, endangerment of a child, and driving while intoxicated.

In an anonymous survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010, one in 50 adults admitted to drunk driving at least once in the previous month.

The survey also revealed that 81 percent of drivers who self-reported driving drunk were men. 1 in 3 who self-reported drunk driving in the survey were men between the ages of 21- and 34-years-old.

The CDC also found, based on the survey, that people who live in the Midwest and people who do not always wear their seat belt are more likely to drink and drive. Overall, officials estimate that people in the U.S. drove drunk 112 million times in 2010.

Judge convicts man of DWI, insists he wasn’t driving

A Houston man was recently convicted of driving while intoxicated despite repeated claims that he was not at the wheel of the car.  The man’s daughter testified to the court that she was driving on the evening that he was arrested.

Police pulled over the white Chevy Astro van being driven by the daughter after receiving reports that the vehicle had been swerving in the northbound lanes of U.S. 59, just south of Sugarland.  The officer noticed that the man, who was sitting in the passenger seat, had red, glassy eyes, and asked to see his driver’s license.

Despite insisting that he had not been driving that evening, the officer arrested him and charged him with drunk driving.  In court, he continued to try to tell officers that his daughter had been driving all evening, however the judge at his trial still convicted him of a Class B misdemeanor DWI.
