Technological advances aid in identity theft

Experts say that the development of technologies like radio frequency identification, or RFID, has contributed to increases in federal crimes like identity theft and credit card fraud.

RFID is able to transfer information from a chip to a scanner through radio frequency waves.  RFID chips are found in credit cards, drivers’ licenses, and passports.  Scanners for RFID chips, like the ones used at many check-out counters, have become relatively easy to purchase for a small fee.

According to a survey completed and published by the Federal Trade Commission in 2009, Texas has one of the highest rates of identity theft complaints in the country.  An average of 130.3 Texans out of every 100,000 has reported experiencing identity theft.

A recent study found that 45 million people in the United States have manipulated their identification information when applying for credit cards, car loans, and cell phone service.

The study examined deliberate variations in Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and names.  The top 3 identity offenders identified in the study had used 417 manipulated Social Security numbers, 64 manipulated dates of birth, and 17 manipulated first names.

According to the study, 8 million people in the U.S. are using two or more Social Security numbers, 16 million people are using two or more dates of birth, and 10 million people in the U.S. have manipulated their identity by incorporating some of their spouse’s information into their own.

Houston was found to have the highest number of identity manipulators.  Other Texas cities that ranked high on the list included Dallas, El Paso, Corpus Christi, and McAllen.
