Houston ranks in the top ten cities in the nation for organized retail theft, according to the National Retail Federation‘s Organized Retail Crime Survey.

The group describes organized retail crime as “theft/fraudulent activity conducted with the intent to convert illegally obtained merchandise, cargo, cash, or cash equivalent into financial gain (no personal use), typically through their online or offline sales.” The survey uncovered that 96% of retailers in the Houston area have experienced such crimes.

Other cities in the top ten include Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas.

Organized retail crime is just one type of theft that can result in serious criminal charges. If you are being accused of theft, contact the theft defense lawyers of Johnson, Johnson & Baer, P.C. at 713-523-0404.

Women caught shoplifting used skirts to hide items

The Houston police are looking for three women suspected of shoplifting from a children’s clothing store near the Galleria.  Shop owners say the three women came into the store with 4 small children and hid items in “shoplifter’s skirts.”

The store’s owner says she did not catch on to what they were doing until it was too late.  When one of the women asked her to come to the back of the store to look for a different size, the two women carrying the stolen items in their skirts sneaked out of the store.

The store had 8 surveillance cameras and the theft was recorded.  Owners say the women are seen putting around $100 worth of merchandise in their skirts and a pair of shoes on one of the children.

Organized theft causes retailers to raise prices

According to the National Retail Federation, organized theft has reached an all-time high.  Retailers in the U.S. lose about $30 million to organized theft every year.

Dallas ranked third on the list of cities in the U.S. with the highest rate of organized retail theft and shoplifting and Houston ranked fourth.  As a result of the loss of profit that stores experience when they are hit by theft, many retailers are increasing their prices on everything from electronics to jeans.

In a survey conducted by the NRF, 95 percent of retail companies said that they had experienced organized theft over the last 12 months.  Furthermore, the survey showed that organized retail crime increased by 6 percent between 2009 and 2010.
