On Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m. a gas station near Sam Houston Parkway was robbed by a Houston teenager.

Houston Police have said that the teenager entered the store and went straight to the cash register. He was allegedly carrying a knife in his hand while he prompted the gas station employee to give him the money in the drawer.

Community calls on law enforcement after rise in burglaries

Posted on November 10th, 2010 No Comments

A recent rise in burglaries in the Sunnyside Gardens neighborhood on Houston’s south side has caused community members to ask for increased law enforcement in the area.  Compared to 2009, burglaries in the area are up by 11 percent.  From January to September in 2009, there were 339 burglaries in the area and 375 for the same time period in 2010.

Community members say that the rise in burglaries is a result of an increase in vacant properties in the area.  Since September, the area has had 30 burglaries and police have tried to pay more attention to the neighborhood.  Houston Police Department Assistant Chief of Police Daniel Perales stated, “Officers have been able to successfully arrest and charge several suspects and we are continuing the investigation in order to arrest and charge additional suspects”.

Harris County police crackdown on organized retail crime

Posted on September 22nd, 2010 No Comments

Harris County officials have taken notice of an increased number of incidents involving organized retail crime in the Houston area.  According to county statistics, 89 percent of Harris County retailers are victims of organized retail crime.  The most common items stolen are designer clothing, electronics, over-the-counter drugs, and baby formula.  Organized criminals then try to sell items for a profit.

Billboards and signs on cabs reading “Stop Organized Retail Crime” will soon be appearing all over Houston.  Police believe the public’s recognition is key to lowering the amount of organized retail crime in the county.  Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia stated, “We’re talking about folks who are actually putting millions of dollars of a dent into our local economy and are  challenging these particular retailers who employ hundreds of people across the Harris County community”.
