This Monday, a Texas doctor was sentenced to a year and 3 months in prison for committing health care fraud.  In Novemebr, the Lufkin doctor plead guilty to charges of healthcare fraud made against him.  In addition to the jail time, the sentence requires the doctor to pay a $30,000 fine and $309,000 in restitution.

The doctor was the owner of a medical practice and emergency care center in Lufkin.  He and an employee were found to be defrauding Medicare and Medicaid by submitting false claims that stated the employee, who was not a licensed physician, was providing medical services.  As a result, the doctor illegally obtained about $250,000 from Medicare and Medicaid.
