More than 40 people arrested in check fraud ring

More than 40 people have been arrested in conjunction with a check fraud ring in Houston. Other suspects continue to evade law enforcement. They are being accused of stealing rent checks and money orders from apartment complex lock boxes.

The accusations include counterfeiting these allegedly stolen checks. After this, the suspects are said to cash out the checks and money orders, sometimes hiring homeless people to conceal their identities.

The arrests come from the combined efforts of Houston Police Department, the US Immigrants and Customs Enforcement, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, and other law enforcement agencies.

Doctor sentenced to 15 months in jail for healthcare fraud

This Monday, a Texas doctor was sentenced to a year and 3 months in prison for committing health care fraud.  In Novemebr, the Lufkin doctor plead guilty to charges of healthcare fraud made against him.  In addition to the jail time, the sentence requires the doctor to pay a $30,000 fine and $309,000 in restitution.

The doctor was the owner of a medical practice and emergency care center in Lufkin.  He and an employee were found to be defrauding Medicare and Medicaid by submitting false claims that stated the employee, who was not a licensed physician, was providing medical services.  As a result, the doctor illegally obtained about $250,000 from Medicare and Medicaid.
