A bill currently awaiting a signature from Governor Perry could change penalties for those arrested and charged with a DUI for having a blood alcohol content of .15 percent or higher.
The bill was written by Houston State Senator Dan Patrick and proposes changing charges for those with a blood alcohol content of two times the legal limit from Class B misdemeanors to Class A misdemeanors.
This bill could effectively double penalties related to DUIs. If the bill is signed, individuals with BACs over .15 percent could face a fine of up to $4,000 and jail time of up to a year. The bill will become effective on September 1st if the governor decides to sign.
