What is probation?

Probation is an alternative punishment to jail time when a person is convicted of a crime, or when they are being considered for parole. It allows the person to continue living and working, but puts heavy restrictions on many aspects of his or her life. Conditions of probation can include curfews, work hour requirements, fines, residence location, and other factors the court deems necessary. In addition, frequent meetings with a probation officer are almost always required. While prosecuting attorneys may present probation as being an “easy way out,” living on probation can be very difficult and cause great amounts of stress.
